Perfect weather and the flowers are brilliant right now. I’m nackered tho. Thank god for big 50 tooth granny gear. I used it a lot!
The ride back down was amazing, a combination of newly built trail linked into old school single track.

Not a bad little pedal. What do you ride?

That looks like a day more than well spent. Beautiful photos of mountain flowers.
Between you and Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)‘ s ride reports I’m struggling to justify being in the 3rd flattest state. At least you can’t tease me with ability to check the local surf breaks from your deck.

50 tooth?? Damn my 34 tooth seems like too many sometimes. Like why would I ever need more than that. Anything steeper I just lose traction anyways (yes I need tires for that also).
Lots of flowers here too! I did a ride about half that length and only a quarter of it was actually uphill, the rest either cruising along the PCH and then a relatively mild fire road followed by a long downhill. Very technical uphill for about 3.5 miles with 1200 feet of uphill though which has certainly tired me out!
Actually I guess total distance was almost the same since this map is missing the 4 mile round trip on the PCH part.

Looks like a fun ride! I just got back from one that was probably 10 miles and 2000 vert. I have never used one of the ride tracking apps so it’s all a wild guess

Well the surf would have to be REALLY big for me to be able to see it from the house lol. Like the big island of Hawaii fell in the ocean level of wave. But yeah I don’t have to travel very far to get close enough to see that.
This was on my way home from my bike ride, about 2 miles from the house.

The gearing is a 1x12 and the front ring is a 32 so for legit steep climbing I need that 50. A 32x50 is the same as a 22x34 gear ratio. I just don’t have to deal with a front derailure.

Oh okay that makes sense, I didn’t think about gear ratios! How do you like the single front ring? I see that on a lot of newer bikes but I would think that just gives me less variability in gearing. And then just be useful to save weight for road bikes. Although I suppose some gears are certainly redundant with my 3 speeds up front and 8 at the back. I’ve never ridden anything without 3 at the front so it would be foreign to me I guess.

That elevation gain makes my legs hurt just looking at it. I’d get maybe a tenth of that on a similar length r ide here.

Single front chainring is definitely better . You won’t miss the front gears at all. You don’t necessarily lo se any range, maybe some “fine tuning”, but you more than make up for it in overall reliability. It’s not so much about weight savings as it is having one less thing to break and basically 0 chain drops.

I like it on the mountain bike but I am sure I’d hate it on a road bike. TBH the rear cassette is a boat anchor. I don’t miss adjusting front dersilures and getting chain ring gashes in my calf.

I am empty, it was a hard ride for me. I wasn’t feeling my climbing legs either.

How do you think the surf forecasts get figured out. Someone on a high point staring out through binoculars/telescope with tide and lunar charts among some other helpful aids at the ready . All of them c all or email in their report and everyone knows where not to be that morning.

There is that. Certainly have to respect the dangers and how quickly conditions can change.
The sea and sea coast in his area are certainly considered quite pleasant other than the potential for predators.

I heard about that. Happens too often for comfort.
B elieve the CG and local authorities are pretty good about keeping tabs on where sharks are sighted and posting warnings. They certainly have more tools than years past to assess their patterns.
